RECORD ENTRY FOR SOCIAL BADMINTON TOURNAMENT!
The latest North Tyneside Social Badminton Tournament, held at John Spence Community High School in North Shields, attracted a record entry of 75 players.
The ages of the players ranged from 14 to 74! It was again extremely pleasing to see over 20 new faces, including a good contingent of very friendly and polite players from Northumbria University.
The Mixed Doubles Final featured 4 players all aged over 50, with the winners being over 60! Similarly the Ladies Doubles Final featured one over 50 and three over 60s, with the over 60s coming out on top again! There was a good deal of laughter to be heard throughout the afternoon, as well as lots of congratulatory comments, with everyone mixing in well, and the atmosphere was one of friendly, enjoyable competition – which is the aim of these social tournaments.
Regular competitor Jo Donaldson ended up winning both the Mixed and Ladies Doubles. She was absolutely delighted when she was also presented with the special Over 50s award for “Outstanding Performance”. Richard Mullen, a relative newcomer to these social tournaments, as this was only his second tournament, also received an over 50s special award, as he reached the semi-final of the Men’s Doubles, and the final of the Mixed.
Other regular competitors also featured in finals as well as some new players. Mark Henderson and Derek Gilhespie both collected more winners’ trophies, but unlucky Geraldine Dodds had to settle for two runners-up trophies! All of the finals were well contested.
Numerous volunteers from Bewicke Badminton Club and others from the North Tyneside Badminton Partnership, ensured that everything ran smoothly, and that the half day tournament finished on time! Double champion Jo, who now has a good number of trophies from these social tournaments, and who thoroughly enjoys competing in them, commented “All players are so very friendly whilst also being competitive. I was really glad to see all the new players, especially the Chinese contingent who brought some friends along to play. It was a huge turnout. It was great. Looking forward to the next one.” Of her growing collection of trophies, Jo said “Am over the moon and proud of them all.”
Norma Waterfield, Northumberland County Secretary and a major organiser of the North Tyneside social tournaments, is delighted with the continued and growing success of the tournaments – “It is great to see how delighted players are when they receive a winner’s or runners-up trophy – these are players who have never won a tournament during their playing career! The fact that everyone is so nice and so friendly makes it a pleasure to organise these social tournaments. Also, when you receive lovely emails from players who haven’t even got to a final, but who enjoyed taking part, it makes it all so worthwhile, even on a bitterly cold Sunday afternoon!
