This Girl Can – Cobalt Vixens

Gillian

Also known as ‘Terrier’

Gillian plays netball as WD, WA, C (even though she claims not to enjoy it) in fact Gillian has been spotted in every position on court. Her son Ben has grown up as an honorary mascot for the squad, and even helped Cobalt Vixens to a silver medal in the Cobalt Rounder’s tournament 2016.

“I hadn’t played since school when the opportunity came to join a new netball team. I spotted an email at work so went along to the very first Cobalt netball training session in 2009 to see what it was like… and years later I’m still playing.

My mind thinks I’m still 21 but my body sometimes tells me different but I love it.

It’s a great social game and it’s a fun way to exercise without realising your exercising. The girls are all great and friendly and we have good social gatherings outside netball also – from the typical girls night out to watching Team Northumbria play and family events through More Cobalt.

It’s a great way to meet people and have a break from the everyday mundane chores that life deals us. The girls are really supportive and playing makes me feel great! I’ve been out of action for a while after planned surgery and really missed playing, now I’m back I feel a great!”

“I remember my first training session with Cobalt Vixen, I was so nervous about attending, although I was relatively fit, I hadn’t played netball for some years. However, I was so comforted by the real mixture of abilities within the team and the warm friendly atmosphere when I arrived.

As we started to play everything came flooding back to me and it felt like I had never been away from the court.

I am the very proud captain of the Cobalt Vixens who are made up of talented, determined and passionate ladies. As well as the additional health and fitness benefits of playing netball, I have also made friends with a great bunch of girls.

I would encourage anyone thinking of getting back into netball to come to a training session with the Cobalt Vixens- you will not be disappointed.”
