With award-winning golden sandy beaches, the iconic St Mary's Lighthouse and the spectacular remains of Tynemouth Priory and Castle, North Tyneside’s coast is rich and diverse in natural beauty and heritage.

Waggonways
Get fit by exploring more than 30 miles of historic 19th century Waggonway. Given a new lease of life by North Tyneside Council with a £2 million Government grant, the Waggonways network was once used to haul coal to ships on the River Tyne from dozens of coalmines in the borough.

Now a number of the former haulage routes have been transformed into a welcoming and accessible community leisure, travel and learning resource.

Visit www.waggonways.co.uk for route maps and further information.

North Tyneside parks

With dozens of parks across North Tyneside, getting healthy can be a walk in the park. For many parks, a variety of improvements are on the way ranging from exciting new playsites - as part of a £5.5million investment - to an innovative creative recycling centre at the Rising Sun Country Park.

Killingworth Lake Park
Killingworth Lake has become a real wildlife haven and an improved amenity for local people. Back in 2005, the council and Environment Agency planted a floating reed bed in the lake. It has proved to a big success, providing nesting opportunities for swans and other wildfowl and an increased fish spawning area. Since then further improvements have been completed, which include:

  • Meadow areas, bulb and woodland planting
  • Additional litterbins and new picnic tables
  • Biodiversity interpretation boards
  • Kick-about area

Local people have been asked to give their views on how the area could be further improved. A display at the White Swan Centre sets out a series of possible ways it could be enhanced such as an events area, fitness trails or outdoor classrooms.

Wallsend Parks
Wallsend Parks, which consists of Richardson Dees Park Civic Hall. Grounds and Prince Road Arboretum, will be transformed in a multi-million pound regeneration scheme. The council has been awarded £165,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop final specifications for a £7million regeneration of the Parks starting in Spring 2010.

New facilities will be introduced, including: improved access; new sports facilities; toilets; café; community training rooms; skatepark and multi-use games area. Recent improvement works have included footpath resurfacing while a new playsite is due for completion this September. The local community will be involved in the development of plans ahead of submitting the second phase of the bid for a further £2.5million of Heritage Lottery funding.

Whitley Park
The £300,000 playsite at Whitley Park scooped a national award in recognition of its children and family-friendly design. It won the Children’s Play category in the prestigious Local Government News Street Design 2008 competition. More than 500 pupils from local first, middle and high schools helped design the site and give their ideas on the equipment.

The playsite aims to cater for children of all ages from toddlers to teens and features a showpiece sand pit complete with pirate ship and diggers as well as climbing and swing equipment. The next phase of work is a new lighting scheme for the park.

Rising Sun Country Park
The Rising Sun County Park, off Whitley Road, Benton, has won the prestigious Green Flag award for four successive years. It has an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders, with pathways designed for disabled access.

The park is run by the council in partnership with the Rising Sun Farm Trust. A 400-acre green oasis, it boasts an organic farm, nature reserve, countryside centre, numerous ponds, woodlands and extensive grassland areas.
