Information for coaches

Coaching is the lifeblood of sport. Whether you’re a parent looking for your child’s first club or a seasoned elite athlete, the coach will be central to the level of success and enjoyment.

It doesn’t matter whether you're working with beginners, occasional performers or top athletes – coaches must be able to demonstrate a commitment to safe, professional and cutting edge coaching practice.

High quality coaching is evident when:

  • Participants respect their coach and respect others
  • Participants are enthusiastic about attending and having fun
  • Participants can map their progress and are motivated to succeed
  • Participants understand the what, how and why of their sport

A high quality coach:

  • Actively reviews their practice
  • Pursues training and development opportunities
  • Adopts an athlete-centred approach
  • Views player development as a long-term process
